Choosing and caring for a thangka

Choosing a subject

If you have a practice, choose the figure connected with it or ask your teacher. If you do not, choose what you are drawn to: Shakyamuni Buddha for awakening, Green Tara for protection and swift help, White Tara and Amitayus for long life, Medicine Buddha for healing, Manjushri for study, Chenrezig for compassion. Mandalas and the Wheel of Life suit spaces for study and reflection.

Understanding grade

Standard pieces have clean drawing and flat, confident colour. Fine pieces add dense shading, detailed landscapes and more gold line-work. Master pieces show hair-fine line, expressive faces and weeks of finishing work. Look closely at faces, hands and the evenness of line — that is where quality shows.

Size

Listings give the painted area. A brocade mount adds roughly half again to the height and a third to the width. For a home altar, a painted area around 40 × 55 cm is comfortable; for a living room wall, 50 × 70 cm or larger.

Care & framing

Keep a thangka out of direct sun and away from damp, incense smoke at close range and cooking fumes. Dust gently with a soft dry brush. Do not wipe, spray or varnish it. If you frame it, use UV-filtering glazing with a spacer so the glass does not touch the paint. If it is brocade-mounted, roll it from the bottom up, painted side in, and never fold it.
